Dear Friends and Colleagues of the Quello Center:
Much has progressed at the Quello Center since I was last in touch, and more is on the horizon. I’d like to bring a few events and other news to your attention.
Forthcoming Quello Lectures
Professor Steve Wildman, the Founding Director of the Quello Center will be giving the last Quello Lecture of the year on 20 April at 4pm. I hope many can join us not only to hear his talk, but also to thank Steve for his contributions to the Center before he heads off to his new home in Colorado. An abstract and more details of Professor Wildman’s talk on concentration in the search business are on the Quello site.
Other forthcoming Quello Lectures are being organized for the Fall. Dr David Bray, the FCC’s CIO, and recent recipient of an Eisenhower Award, will speak at MSU on 21 September 2015 on public service and change agents for the digital age. Later that week, American University Professor Laura DeNardis, author of The Global War for Internet Governance (Yale University Press 2014), will present her most recent thinking on this topic at a Quello Lecture to be held in Washington DC on 24 September 2015. And in October, Professor Eli Noam, Director of CITI at Columbia University, and one of the leading authorities in our field, will be presenting a Quello Lecture here at MSU on media concentration in the global digital age.Recent Lectures and Seminars
Of the recent Quello events, two are featured online. The first was our seminar in Detroit, focused on the city’s initiatives to open data as one aspect of its efforts to enhance citizen engagement. The seminar, kicked off by a Garlin Gilcrest of the City of Detroit is available online.

The second is a talk here at MSU by Alexander Heffner, the new host of Open Mind, one of the pioneering initiatives in public television. He addresses the many issues tied to sustaining quality broadcast journalism in the digital era.

New Positions at the Quello Center
We have invited applications for a new position at the Quello Center for an Assistant Research Professor. Click for more information. In addition, we will be inviting applications for a postdoctoral research position in the near-future.
Research Up-Date
Our most recent new project is our launch of a Network Neutrality Impact Study. The FCC’s decision on net neutrality presents an opportunity for a longitudinal quasi-experiment – one that will provide evidence on the actual role that net neutrality will play for actors across the Internet and telecommunication industries, but also users and consumers of Internet services. Our project builds on the independence of the Quello Center and collaboration across the University, including faculty from the departments of Media and Information, Economics, Political Science, College of Law, and the Institute for Public Utilities Policy Research & Education.
