Research Associate (Postdoctoral Researcher)
Position: This position is associated with the Quello Center (https://quello.msu.edu), Department of Media and Information, College of Communication Arts and Sciences. The Quello Center conducts research to inform media, communication, and information policy. It critically examines the role of technology, policy and regulation for citizens, communities, and society. We often work with multiple stakeholders to help find solutions that harness the full benefits of advanced communications equitably.
The research associate (postdoctoral researcher) will contribute to the Free Speech in a Hyperconnected Society project. This interdisciplinary research project critically examines the challenges of protecting robust free speech online while mitigating undesirable effects of hate speech and other forms of expression that encourage violence or social unrest. It will explore the strengths and weaknesses of policy proposals discussed in the United States and internationally and develop alternative approaches.
The candidate will employ appropriate theoretical perspectives, including legal, economic, or computational approaches, to advance understanding of the dynamics of online speech, its relations to the formation of individual and shared mental models, and to individual and group behavior. The successful candidate will also contribute to research management, as related to the project.
The research associate will contribute to all stages of this project, including the collection of empirical data using qualitative and quantitative methods, data analysis and interpretation and possibly the conception, design, and conduct of experiments. The successful candidate will be trained in the responsible conduct of research.
Qualifications: Applicants must have their Ph.D. or J.D. degree (can be ABD) in a field related to the project, including, but not limited to, information science, law, economics, communications, or computer science. A background or a strong interest in more than one of these areas, for example, in computational communications, information science and law, or computer science and economics, is a plus. The applicant must also show evidence of scholarly productivity in the form of journal articles, conference presentations.
Salary & Benefits: Salary is commensurate with pay scales within the College of Communication Arts and Sciences plus benefits.
