Developing and leading a research center within Michigan State University comes with a variety of unique challenges and opportunities that can be quite different from those in an academic department, especially if the center has an interdisciplinary focus. The primary purpose of this seminar is to clarify the nature of what it means to be a Center Director: What does it entail? What are the challenges, benefits, and rewards? How can one prepare for these roles? What skills are needed? What can one expect? What is the learning curve? In this session, a panel of MSU Center Directors will reflect on what these leadership positions really entail. A second important focus of this session will be on supporting and promoting interdisciplinary initiatives by working with faculty across the disciplines and with funding agencies. Last, but not least, they will answer the question: Why do it? How can leading a Center enhance one’s leadership skills and opportunities? This will be a highly interactive session integrating participant questions throughout.
